Steam is an excellent way to remove mould from silicone tile sealant in shower cubicles, and an excellent chemical free way to clean your shower.

Steam will not damage silicone sealant if you work carefully and do not overheat an area.

If you hold the steamer in the same place for a very long time it is possible to overheat an area that may cause damage to sealant but this is very unlikely.

If your sealant is already damaged and lifting, heat may worsen this lifting so be careful.

To avoid any risk, use a sweeping motion across one area of sealant at a time.

Is Steam good for Cleaning Silicone Sealant in the Shower or kitchen?

Silicone has a non porous surface so mould is generally on the uppermost surface layer. Steam easily penetrates and loosens this mould on silicone sealant surfaces and kills the spores that keeps it coming back.

In many cases steam alone can be used to blast mould from your tile silicon without scrubbing, but for particularly bad mould accumulations, steam will loosen the mould and it spores from the surface enabling you to scrub the surface clean with ease.

Will Steam Cleaning Remove Dark Mold on Silicon Sealant

Yes, steam will easily remove mold from silicone sealant.

If there is any remaining discoloration on the sealant after steam cleaning, this means that the mold has left behind pigmentation that steam cannot remove. In this situation, use some bleach and soak the sealant to remove the stain.

We obviously loooove steam cleaning here at steamcleanerpro!

But to people new to steam cleaning, sometimes the benefits of steam mops are not really clear.

So today, I m going to show you the benefits of steam mops and just how amazing steam cleaning is in general. But first of all, what are they, and how do they work?

The Benefits of Steam Mops

Steam mops quickly eliminate dirt, grime and bacteria from floor surfaces. The Steam cleans and disinfects areas without the use of chemicals making them a great choice for parents, pet owners and people with allergies.

Advantages Of Steam Mops

1. Excellent Cleaning Potency

Steam mops are amazingly efficiency when it comes to removing scuff and dirt from the floors.

The steam gets into the microscopic imperfections of a surface and acts as a solvent for dissolving and carrying away dirt and grime.

As a huge bonus, the heat emanating from the steam easily disinfects the and sanitizes surfaces.

2. Easy and Time Efficient

Steam mops are super easy to setup and use. Just plug it in and a few moments later you are good to go!

All it takes is a couple of passes to ensure that the area is spotless, which is a huge improvement compared to a regular mop.

There is no need to go back and forth with buckets replacing the filthy water. Steam mops only use microfiber pads that are easy to clean and use again. Just pop them in the wash and you can use them again.

3. No More Wet Floors And Footprints!

Steam Mops do not require buckets of water mixed with nasty chemicals to clean a floor. They contain all the water they need in the tank.

Not only do you remove stains fasters, but also floors take a lot less time to dry.

As you move around the room the steam evaporates quickly so your floors are almost instantly dry. So no more wet floors and dirty footprints!

As a bonus, with less slippery surfaces in your home, you are less likely to get hurt.

4. All Natural And Non-Toxic

Steam mops do not require chemicals to clean. As you are relying on heat rather than chemicals to remove bacteria you can remove many harmful chemicals from your home. Say goodby to all those nasty chemicals!

This is a great bonus for people with small children and pets. Your home becomes a much safer and healthier place to be.

As a bonus, your home will smell more fresh and natural and less overwhelming with chemical fumes.

5. Environmentally Friendly

Steam Cleaning uses no chemicals to clean. It’s a great feeling knowing that you are making an environmentally sustainable choice when you choose a steam mop over cleaning chemicals.

Owning a steam mop helps you do your part to help reduce the amount of chemical pollution that we pore down the drain.

5. Great for People With Allergies

Steam mop allows you to feel what allergen-free home smells like, which is really a life-changing experience if you or someone in your home is allergic to chemicals.

As you don’t have to scrub floors with cleaning products you won’t have to worry about anything getting on your skin or in your lungs, developing a rash, or once again having an allergic reaction.

Furthermore, dust mites and bed bugs can be eliminated really quickly with the repeated use of a steam cleaner. All without chemicals!

6. Steam Cleaning Is Cost-Effective

You will not have to spend ANYTHING on cleaning products, given that the cleaner only relies on water.

Second, you will clean the floors faster so you save time which you can invest elsewhere.

Third, and maybe the most important one, is that you preserve your own health. You arms legs and back won’t hurt, you are less likely to get sick, and you’ll be less likely to hire someone to help with your cleaning.

7. Steam Cleaning = The Best Solutions for Pet Owners

Although we love our furry friends, we are well-aware of the fact that they leave their hair all around the house or apartment.

Not only that but also they love playing outside and bringing the dirt back to our homes.

A steam mop is a kid and pet-friendly solution for removing fur from the floors and carpets, which can be a struggle even with a vacuum cleaner.

Disadvantages and Things to Avoid with Steam Mop

It is undeniable that there are some amazing benefits of using a steam mop, but bear in mind that it can also be a double-edged sword.

Although, it is a really useful cleaning gadget, there are certain things you should definitely avoid or look out for when using a steam mop.

1. Don’t Clean One Spot For Too Long

This is something you will likely see in every instruction manual for a steam mop. Most surfaces (with the exception of tile) are susceptible to damage from overheating.

The heat needs around 10 to 15 seconds to do its work, and prolonged use over the same surface is likely to cause it damage as the steam overheats the surface.

2. Do Not Steam Clean Waxed Floors

The steaming heat definitely does not mix well with a recently waxed floor, as it will melt the wax, and ruin the fresh glossy surface.

If you need to clean something from a recently waxed floor, make sure to test it first.

Pick a spot underneath your furniture that is generally not visible to see what happens, before you try and clean the exposed area of the floor.

3. Be Very Careful with Wooden Floors

Truth be told you should be cautious about the wooden surfaces in general but be extra careful with unsealed wood floorings.

Unsealed floors, old wooden floors, and even some types of wood might turn out problematic.

Since you are using water, even the smallest opening can be enough for it to end up inside the wood floor which can cause it to swell up and/or warp. This is the same reason that mopping should be avoided on some wooden floors.

Check with the manufacturer before steam cleaning and choose a steam cleaner that is well suited to steam cleaning hardwood floors. It would be for the best to consult with online users on online forms that have the same floor as you, to get their feedback before you start cleaning.

Steam Mops FAQ

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions pertaining to the use and benefits of a steam mop.

Is Steam Cleaning Really Effective?

Steam cleaning is both an effective and eco-friendly way to remove germs, bacteria, dirt, and stains from floors, carpets, and furniture. When the steam mop is used correctly it can eliminate almost 99% of bacteria from a particular surface.

Can I Use Floor Cleaner With My Steam Mop?

It is strongly advised that you do not put any cleaning products in your steam mop. Almost all manufacturers will recommend that you use demineralized water instead of tap water to prevent scale.

The sheer heat power is enough to kill off germs, bacteria, and remove stains. If you use anything else other than water you will likely cause corrosion to your device, and make your warranty void.

Can I add scent/freshener/aroma to a steam mop?

Do not put anything other than water in the tank of your steam mop. This can damage your steam mop, cause blockages in the nozzle and even do damage to your health when you breath in vaporized chemicals.

Some steam mops actually come with a pocket where you can insert a fragrance disc into the head.

In case your mop doesn’t have that pocket you can sew a pocket into into the mop head on your own, or place the fragrance disc within the microfiber mop. There is a nice guide on how to make these scented discs.

Can I use a steam mop on the Vinyl floor?

No, a regular steam mop can damage vinyl floors. There are special steam mops or cleaners designed for use on the Vinyl floors. The pressurized heat can cause damage to it, so if you are going to use it, make sure to reduce the power to 50%.

Can I use a steam mop on the Laminate floor?

Don’t use a steam mop on laminate floors. If the moisture manages to seep into cracks it will cause it to swell and warp.

Can I use a steam mop on the Bamboo floor?

Don’t use a steam mop on bamboo floors. The moisture will cause it to swell and warp.

Can I put vinegar in my steam mop?

If you are using the steam mop to clean tile floors, vinyl floors, or linoleum then you can add vinegar. DO NOT add vinegar to the steam mop when you are using it on the hardwood floor, it will cause damage to your floor.

Is steam cleaning bad for grout?

Grout can withstand the steam and heat, so steam cleaning it is a viable option. However, if the grout is already damaged the steam can make it worse, so it is not advised.

Can you use tap water in steam mops?

It is advised that you use distilled water as it does not contain minerals, which can cling to the steam mop and accumulate over time, making it less effective.

BISSELL PowerFresh 1940 Steam Mop Review

Our Rating: 4.7 / 5

BISSELL PowerFresh Steam Mop, Floor Steamer, Tile Cleaner,...

The PowerFresh 1940 is a superb option if you’re looking for a cleaning tool for your tile floors.

For one, the mop is fitted with microfiber pads, which aid in cleaning any dirt particles stuck in the tiles. While other steam mops have a problem of producing either too little or excess steam, this cleaner produces the perfect amount needed for cleaning thanks to the adjustable steam levels.

Important to note is that the PowerFresh, like most other steam mops, is a corded model. Thus, every time you need to clean a different room, you’ll have to unplug and plug it in the nearest socket. The silver lining to this is that it has a long power cord of about 23 feet, which gives you a little more flexibility.

This mop tips the scales at 6 lbs., which is on the lighter side of the weight spectrum. This means it’s easy to carry. It can also stand on its own, a factor that eases storage.

The mop is incredibly easy to assemble. In my experience, I was able to piece it together in under a minute. The ease of assembly makes it suitable for occasional cleaning tasks like spills

Highlights and Features

  • Weighs 6 lbs. and measures 46 x 11.6 inches

  • Has a water tank capacity of 0.35L

  • Can be used to clean all hard floors- tile, hardwood, ceramic, marble and more

  • Provides 3 steam levels to choose from

  • Choose between scrubby and soft mop pads

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Has the right level of steam to tackle any cleaning task

  • Easy to assemble

  • Lightweight construction for portability

Cons

  • Lacks a tray to rest on after cleaning

  • Not enough pads included so buy more pads at the time of purchase!

O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop Review

Our Rating: 4.1 / 5

O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop with 1 Extra Refill

If you’re looking for a pocket-friendly steam mop for your tile floors, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper option than O-Cedar Microfiber Mop. And even with the reasonable pricing, the mop offers a decent range of features.

For one, it’s among the lightest mops on the market as it weighs just 5 pounds. This means that you won’t tire your arms when carrying it around.

Now from a distance, the O-Cedar looks like a typical steam cleaner for tile floors. But if you examine it closely, you’ll notice that most, if not all, of its parts have been shrunk down by designing them in a smaller and narrower design. The purpose of this is to provide a compact and lightweight unit.

On the downside though, this also implies that you’ll have to make more passes to cover a larger area. But what this steam mop lacks in capacity and size, it makes up for in design.

We’re referring to the strategically located controls found on the mid section. These include an on/off button and a switch selector for setting the steam level. Better yet, the mop pad is triangular in shape, enabling you to access remote areas and corners with ease.

Another sector where O-Cedar really shines is in performance. For one, the fact that it’s smaller than most steam mops means it takes a shorter time to heat up. The manufacturer alleges that it only takes 20 seconds to attain the desired temperature.

Although its tank capacity has not been specified, it’s estimated that the steam mop can hold about 13 ounces. This may seem like such a negligible disparity from the 12-ounce tanks. But for some, this could mean the difference between having to refill the tank before completing one cycle of cleaning.

Highlights and Features

  • Weighs 5 lbs.

  • Compact design that can fit in remote areas

  • Takes a measly 20 seconds to heat up

  • Comes with a snap-on glider for cleaning carpets and a spare microfiber pad

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Available in a stylish, bright-red color

  • Is lightweight with simple controls

  • Versatile as it can be used to clean carpets

  • Affordable

  • Quick heat-up time

Cons

  • It could do with more accessories

  • While it absolutely does clean, it doesn't deep clean as well as the shark mop on heavily soiled floors

When my couch old was a few years old it got dirty from my kids and their muck! After a while sitting on the stained couch felt odd and gross. It decreased my level of comfort and I felt self-conscious when I had visitors over. My eyes were constantly seeking out the smudges!

Over time most fun activities will leave stains on your couch. Having kids, a pet or an oopsi when entertaining friends with pizza and drinks. Inevitably your couch is going to get dirty.

But don’t worry, there’s a simple routine you can follow to get your couch back to feeling new and fresh by using an upholstery steam cleaner and I’m going to show you how. Here’s the 10-step guide for how to steam clean a couch.

What Are the Benefits of Steam Cleaning a Couch?

  1. Steam is a powerful cleaner of tough stains. It will give your fabric a refreshed look, and a deep clean will give it a nice spruce.
  2. Steam is used for sterilization because of its proven ability to kill germs. It also deodorizes the spots you treat, that’s essential when you have a pet.
  3. Most often, you wouldn’t need to apply chemical products when you’re steaming. The intense steam is quite capable of removing tough stains.
  4. Steam cleaning is an eco-friendly alternative. It’s also quick and easy, as the steam cleaners are pretty straight forward and easy to operate.

How to Steam Clean Your Couch in 10 Simple Steps

Steam cleaning a couch is quicker, easier, and more efficient than manual cleaning. It’s also a more economical option than using a cleaning service. Here’s how to get a  steam clean sofa.

Step 1: Gather What You Need

Getting everything ready before you begin may sound simple, but it saves you lots of time and effort, or possibly getting halfway through and having to stop! There are a few essential things to get to steam a couch or sofa, so here’s what you’ll need:

  • A couple of pieces of clean dry cloth
  • A dry sponge
  • A little bowl with liquid soap and water
  • A portable vacuum cleaner or the one you have
  • An upholstery steam cleaner
  • A cup of water for the steam cleaner
  • Stain removal product (optional)

!IMPORTANT!

Make sure check the washing information on your couch before you use any chemical or hot steam on your couch’s fabric. Couches usually have a stitched label somewhere to tell you the washing recommendations of the fabric and if it has special requirements. Check that now.

Step 2: Vacuum Your Couch

Vacuum your couch first to get rid of all the dry dirt. This is a really important step! Applying steam to dust dilutes it and make your fabric look muddy. If you couch is a light color this might a big problem!

Take the pillows off and use a nozzel to get into the creases. You’ll probably find crumbs and food remains in these tight spots. Look around the armrests and behind the cushions too. These are all favorite hiding spots for leftovers.

Use a high-power setting to remove as much dust as possible from the deep layers of the upholstery. Vacuuming will deal with all the accumulated pet hair clinging to the fabric or stuck behind the cushions. Now move on to the next step, with a piece of clean dry cloth.

Step 3: Do Some Surface Cleaning

Clean the parts of the couch you cannot vacuum. Carefully lift one corner of the couch and wipe off the dust from the feet or any other substances clinging to the wooden supports. You’d be surprised how much dirt can wrap itself around that spot. Chewing gum, cat excrement, a piece of cheese from last week’s pizza, or a crushed insect.

This is step doesn’t seem essential considering it’s the underside of the couch and all. It’s important though. Foodstuff is an open invitation for insects. The smell could build up after a while too, so just include that part in your cleaning scheme.

Step 4: Remove The Easy Stains

With a sponge and some soapy water, spot clean the easy stains. This step needs to come after removing all the dust and pet hair. Mixing water and dust never ends well.

Starting with a small hidden spot first, use a sponge soaked in water and some detergent, spot soak the stains with a little in soap and water. After a few minutes, rub the stain with the sponge from the outside in. This movement limits the spread of the stain outwards.

!TIP!

Rub the stain with the sponge from the outside in to stop the spread of any stain

The easy stains shouldn’t take too much handling to come off. Some stains are easier than others. You can remove a coffee stain in a minute, but an oily cheese smudge would take a bit more to get rid of.

After this step get a clean dry cloth and pat dry the stained area, this will help remove some of the grim. You can also use a paper towel if it’s convenient, these work well. Try to remove as much water as you can.

Step 5: Prepare Your Steamer

Make sure that your Steam Cleaner is up to temperature. You want to be using steam that is hot enough to kill bacteria and neutralize smells so make sure that your steam cleaner is ready.

Steam cleaners usually take some time to heat up enough to make quality steam. Some models are quick and get ready for work in 30 seconds. Others take up to 10 minutes to be fully prepared.

Line up the required accessories. Your most important bits are the brushes and length extension rod. You need small round brushes for tight spaces and armrests, a wedge-shaped brush for the creases, and a broad brush for the flat areas.

Step 6: Steam the Cushions

Check the labels and spot test first. Make sure that the fabric of the cushions can tolerate the heat and steam. Your cushions might be colored so check if the colored dye is stable by applying water in a hidden spot of the cushion first before steaming.

Cushions could also have frills or lace adornments. You must check if these parts too can be steam cleaned. Revising this washing labels would take a moment, but it will save a lot of heartache if anything goes wrong.

Use a medium round brush to steam the face and backside of the cushions. Wait for each side to dry before working on the next side. This would maintain the shape of your cushions.

Step 7: Steam the Backrest

Start steaming the main part of the couch by steam cleaning the backrest. You might have to climb on the couch to reach the backrest so it’s best to do this part while the rest of the couch is dry.

The backrest will most probably have stains or dark areas from your hair oils where you lean back to rest or nap. Consistent steaming will remove the tinted area right away.

Reapply steam at the places where there’s more staining. You might also try leaving it soaking in the humidity for a few minutes, and then re-apply.

Fabrics usually change color when they become humid. Wait for about 10 minutes, then check visually whether there are still any stains or darker parts of the fabric.

Steam any required parts once more, but don’t overdo it. You wouldn’t want your couch to become too moist.

Pat the couch down with a dry rag to pull any moisture and dirt from the surface.

At this point, the backrest should look clean and refreshed!

Step 8: Steam the Sides and Back of the Couch

Starting on the inside of the armrests, work your way outwards over the arm rest and down the sides on the external parts.

Armrests are notorious for having grime! Some people even use washable armrest covering to protect this part.

Armrest stains are often dark and greasy from our skin’s oils. Steam melts and degreases oily stains, but the produced muck wouldn’t go away on its own. Use a dry cloth to soak up the degreased residue. You might need to go over it with your steamer once more to make sure it’s all gone.

Finally, take the steamer to the external part of the back. This should be the least stained component of the couch. It’s the farthest from all the action, but a pet could have reached it too, so check!

Step 9: Remove the Stubborn Stains

Your couch should look and smell great but it’s possible some stains may remain that are too hard to budge without further treatments.

If you haven’t been able to shift the stains yet, it might be time to thing about using a stain removal product or getting a upholstery shampooer.

We recommend using a commercial stain removal product to get rid of the really hard to remove stains. Before you do this, again make sure it’s suitable for your fabric. Once product that has worked for me and has a good track record with tough stains is XXXX.

After this, you can re-steam the stain site but usually you wouldn’t have to. We’d recommend a little steaming to remove any residual chemicals. This can also help blend any remaining stain to the rest of the couch.

Step 10: Leave Your Couch to Dry

Stream cleaning will leave your couch slightly damp when the heated vapor cools. This humidity should be dried off completely to maintain long term freshness of the fabric.

Leave the windows open. Natural air circulation is quite enough to dry it up. It would also be great to let the sun in if you have that option.

Turn the cushions to the other side to make sure they’re thoroughly crisp and fluffed up.

You Are Finished!

Take a quick moment to take a step back to enjoy your sparkling freshly steamed couch! Be happy! You just steam cleaned your couch and saved lots of money!

What Are the Other Fabric Cleaning Options?

Steaming is an optimal solution for cleaning your couch, but it’s not your only choice. Here are some other alternatives.

Get Professional Help

You can call in a professional cleaning service to get your couch in shape. This is usually done in a day. But you have to search for the right contractor, book his services, and schedule an appointment.

You’d also have to stay at home the whole day to wait for the cleaners. You might also supervise their work. Some companies will ask you to send the couch over, so there’s that other arrangement.

Finally, you’ll pay them for their services plus all the materials and chemicals used. They often use copious amounts of cleaning products to get the job done. Mostly they’re industrial cleaning agents. You can specify eco-friendly products if you like.

Use Commercial Cleaning Products

You can use strong soap and water to clean up your couch. It’s not bad and gets your couch to an acceptable state. The coverage is usually limited to visible grime and stains.

It also takes a long time to achieve a satisfactory level of cleanliness.

Use DIY Home Remedies

You can use a more natural approach to cleaning your couch. Many of the materials in your kitchen serve as efficient stain removers. Vinegar, lemon, soda water, and baking soda are some of the stuff you can use.

They’ll also address local spots on the couch. A full deep clean is hard to achieve with these resources.

Some Final Thoughts About Steam Cleaning Couches

Couches are an easy target for the accumulation of stains and grime. It’s where we sit with our loved ones and entertain our friends. After a while, we all have food remains, spilled coffee or fruit juice, cake stains, and grimy patches of unknown origin.

Sprucing up your couch with a refreshing shot of steam resets it back to its glamorous state, and neatness usually equals comfort. Now you know the steps it is easy to keep your couch looking sparkling and elegant enough to invite some friends over.

We hope this 10 step guide for how to steam clean a couch helped and motivated you! Enjoy your sparkling clean couch, and please share with us your own tips tricks below. Leave a comment and tell us all about it!

Furniture Steam Cleaner FAQ

Why Do You Need a Furniture Steam Cleaner?

These appliances don’t come cheap, and they need space to be stored when they’re not in use. So, why would you get one?

Here are some good reasons:

  1. They’re quite handy if you have kids or pets.
  2. They don’t need extra cleaning products to tidy up your furniture.
  3. Steam cleaning is an ecofriendly way to clean your couch.
  4. Steam eliminates plenty of germs and bed bugs.
  5. Steam cleaning removes odors together with dirt.
  6. Cleaning with steam is safer for your family than using chemicals and detergents.
  7. They’re powerful cleaners, so they can remove grease, dirt, and tough stains in general.
  8. They can be used for many cleaning purposes from upholstery to outdoor equipment.
  9. Some models are budget-friendly, while delivering a good steaming job.
  10. Steam cleaners are available in compact models, so you wouldn’t need a lot of storage space.

How to Choose the Best Furniture Steam Cleaner

We looked at tens of steam cleaners, and some were pretty good in features, but lacked quality. Others were great in every way, but didn’t fit the bill for cleaning fabrics.

Our final word about this: picking a steam cleaner that’s safe for fabrics is overwhelming. But we made it, and here are the main considerations that a good furniture steamer should have.

Steam Pressure and Temperature

The output steam should come out at a pressure high enough to penetrate the many layers of upholstery. This could be done by using a powerful steam pump or by applying a nozzle.

The temperature should be suitable for your fabric. Some can take the heat like pre-shrunk cotton, and others would need a lower setting.

Run-Time

Cleaning up the whole house isn’t the same as tidying-up the patio set. The larger area needs a long uninterrupted run-time. The other scenario doesn’t need much time, and you can use a small portable steamer to that end.

Choose an upholstery steam cleaner with a large reservoir for bigger tasks. You can get up to 90 minutes of continuous operation on a single water fill.

Portability

Pick a lightweight steam cleaner if you’re going to move from this room to the kitchen, then up the stairs. Pair high power steam with portability if that suits your needs. There are such models.

Intense steam cleaners are usually bulky, but they offer much power and long runtime. This is worthwhile if you have large rooms.

Adaptability

Recently manufacturers noticed that handheld models were highly in demand. That’s why they made steamers you can use as mobile units, or split up and use them as handheld steamers.

This adaptable 2-in-1 design gives you plenty of value for your money and provides a lot more versatility of application.

The Accessory Set

Some people pick one or two add-ons for vacuum cleaners or steamers, and others use the whole set.

The most important accessories for furniture steam cleaners are the brush sets. You’d need small ones for the details, a broad brush for the large areas, and a small wedge to go into the creases and crevices.

It’s also essential to have a long extension rod. Curtains are high up there, and they could certainly use a good steaming along with the rest of the furniture.

Distilled or Tap Water

Steamers usually require distilled water to work properly. Some manufacturers realized that this might be a hassle, so they opted for models that are quite tolerant of tap water. They usually block up after extended use anyway due to calcium build up. I recommend using distilled water in a steam cleaner regardless of the recommendation.

The recommendation is pretty obvious here; look for a model that’s not needy or finicky with its water. There are several good-natured devices out there. Steam cleaners quickly spruce up your house

Conclusion

The Top spot for furniture steam cleaners was an easy choice. The Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner pretty much has it all. It’s powerful, gentle on the fabrics, and elegantly designed.

It’s also versatile, efficient, and has a long run-time. We like the idea that it has extensive quality and safety testing. That’s always reassuring especially for home appliances.

The DB Tech Steam Cleaner is a great alternative if you have smaller tasks. The handheld steam cleaner is intense and thorough despite its petite stature. It’s also a budget-friendly option and saves a lot of storage space.

We hope this review helped in narrowing down your choices. Share with us your experiences with steam cleaners. Leave a comment and tell us all about it!

Things to Consider Before Buying a Steam Cleaner

What should I consider when buying a steam cleaner?

There are several factors to consider when buying a steam cleaner. We’ll briefly mention some of them below.

Tools Provided

If you need a steam cleaner that’ll do multiple cleaning tasks around the house, checking the cleaning tools provided with it and what each does is a must.

Weight and Size

Make sure you check the weight and size of the steam cleaner before you buy it. They come in all sizes and weights, so you need to choose the one appropriate according to your cleaning needs and the storage space you have.

Size of Water Tank

One of the main features of a steam cleaner is the size of the water tank, as this is the source of steam production for the machine. If you require a hard-working steam cleaner, then you’ll want one with a large water tank for continuous steam production.

Why should I use steam products?

Steam cleaning is the best possible way to remove bacteria and dirt that aren’t visible without having to use chemicals. Steam products give you a cleaning method that’s safe and healthy for children and animals.

Can I use chemicals in steam cleaners?

No. This steam cleaner is designed to produce vapor that’s chemical-free. In fact, if you add chemicals you’ll probably damage it.

The Final Verdict

Keeping windows perfectly clean and streak-free requires a lot of work. Never fear, with a steam cleaner, you can easily clean your windows quickly and with little fuss. Forget the sprays and detergents, steam cleaning your widows is simple, easy and affordable!

Today I’ll be sharing with you my five-step guide on how to steam clean your windows. Let’s start by understanding what you need to steam clean windows.

What is the best Steam cleaner for windows?

For cleaning windows using a steam cleaner you’ll need a steam cleaner that comes with a squeegee handle OR a portable steam cleaner and a stand-alone squeegee.

It doesn’t matter if you use a portable steam cleaning machine or use a larger machine with the squeegee attachment. If you buy a full-size machine make sure to look for machines that support wand attachments and comes with the squeegee wand in the kit like this one.

The easiest way to steam clean windows is with the steam cleaner with a squeegee attachment. With this, you’ll only need the steam cleaning machine with the appropriate squeegee attachment, and a dry clean microfiber cloth or cleaning rags. Here are my recommendations for the best steam cleaners for windows.

How To Steam Clean Windows? The 5-Step Guide

Using a steam cleaner to clean your windows is so much easier than people expect. Here are the four simple steps to steam clean your windows.

Step 1 – Prepare The Window Area And Steam Cleaner

Prepare the work area by placing a small towel or rag under the window on the sill to capture any runoff water. Don’t skip this step! You will end up with water everywhere and you might even potentially stain your carpet or walls where any excess water drips down.

Fill your steam cleaning machine with enough water according to the instructions of the machine’s manufacturer.

There’s usually a mark that specifies the level of water you need to reach. After that, plug in the cleaner and turn it on to let the water heat up. Once the water turns into vapor steam, you’re ready to clean your windows.

Steam Cleaner Pro Tip:

For beautiful streak-free results when steam cleaning windows, be sure to use distilled water in your steam cleaner. Water distillers can help you here by constantly producing distilled water. Tap water makes it a little harder to get perfect results due to impurities. Let’s face it we are all perfectionists at heart 💓.

Step 2 – Heat The Surface And Loosen The Grit

If it is cold, first give the window a quick blast from a distance to heat up the window uniformly otherwise your window might crack due to thermal stress. If it is very very cold, avoid steam cleaning your windows on these days. (see tip on cold climates)

Loosen the grit and heat the oils by applying a first blast of steam. Apply the steam to the window use vertical strokes going from top to bottom.

Apply steam over the glass surface to cover the whole window.

Step 3 – Squeegee The Water

Using the squeegee, wipe the window to remove the vapor that condensed into the water on the surface. This water contains all the dirt, oils and grime.

Use continuous horizontal motion from left to right, wiping the window starting from the top and working down.

Steam Cleaner Pro Tip:

Don’t wait too long for this step as the oils cool back down after some time which makes it harder to budge them. If the vapor cools apply some more steam to the surface before using the squeegee.

Step 4 – Wipe The Frames

Wipe all the accumulated water from the window sill and from around the frames using a clean cloth. The towel you laid down in step one should have captured all the excess water keeping your walls and floors clean

Steam Cleaner Pro Tip:

In addition to making the window panes crystal clear, you can easily use the steam to clean the window frames. If the frames or your windows are particularly dirty, give them a blast of steam and a wipe with a cloth before Step 3.

These parts are known to accumulate tons of dust and debris, especially in the little cracks and crevices of wooden frames. Using the steam would penetrate these tiny places and wash away all the dirt.

Step 5 – Wipe the Last Drops And Streaks

By now most of the water is gone but there are often few drops of water left or a streak or two on the glass.

Streak Free Microfiber Cloth Clean Any Surface with Just...

Wipe all water from the window using the dry microfiber cloth or cloth. For best results wipe in a circular motion until all the liquid is absorbed.

Caution For Cold Climates!

If you live in a cold climate be careful when steam cleaning your windows! In cold temperatures, if the surface is heated unevenly and quickly, the glass can crack.

This occurs when a cold window is hit by a blast of hot steam from close range on a small area. The area heated expands rapidly while the other parts remain cool. This puts lots of stress on the window, and the window cracks.

To avoid cracked windows, blast the window from a distance with a spray that covers the whole window in the one spray. This will heat the glass evenly and prevent cracks occurring.

My Bonus Tips For Steam Cleaning Windows

Here are my tips and recommendations to reach perfect results and stay safe at the same time:

  • Make sure all attachments and accessories are firmly secured to the machine.
  • Don’t use any detergents, oils, cleaning products or any other kind of chemicals. The steam cleaning machines are made to work only with water. Hot water is enough to sanitize the glass and get rid of most of the germs.
  • The heat could cause severe burns to the skin. It’s safer to wear protective goggles and clothes. Don’t direct the water vapor stream at any living creature like plants or animals. Don’t expose your hands and arms to it as well.
  • Unplug the machine before trying to empty it, refill it with water or remove any attachments AND LET IT COOL DOWN FIRST
  • Glass is susceptible to cracking caused by abrupt and extreme changes in temperature. For this reason, you should avoid steam cleaning glass windows on very cold days.
  • To eliminate the risk of cracking start by steaming the surface from a distance. This procedure allows the cold glass to gradually get warmed up and be prepared for the high-temperature steam.
  • If your windows are very dirty, use a vacuum cleaner to quickly remove large amounts of dust and debris and wipe the window with a dry cloth before using the steam cleaner. This initial step will make the steam cleaning smoother.
  • While cleaning, put a small towel beneath the window to prevent water drops from dripping down the floor.
  • Always use continuous streaks from top to bottom for your cleaning motion.
  • When using the squeegee, periodically wipe it off using a dry, clean cloth to remove excess water and prevent it from staining the glass all over again.
  • As soon as the microfibre cloth becomes too damp, replace it with a clean and dry one.
  • After you finish cleaning, make sure to release all the steam remaining in the cleaner to avoid any accidental release of steam that could hurt anyone.
  • Make sure to empty the cleaner of all the water and dry it to prevent any creation of mold inside the machine.

Why Is Steam Cleaning Good For Cleaning Windows?

Steam cleaning is effective, quick, and has several benefits. Steam cleaning uses only water without any kind of chemicals or artificial products so it is environmentally friendly and safe for children, animals or any person with allergies.

The steam cleaning machine heats the water to very high temperatures until it turns into vapor steam. The power of the steam isn’t only effective in completely removing even the most stubborn of dirt, but it also helps sanitize the surface you’re cleaning and kill all sorts of germs and bacteria.

It usually costs more to get set up with a steam cleaner, but in the long run, you save lots of money. Is only uses water, so there won’t be any more overhead cost spent on cleaning supplies and chemicals.

Another great benefit is the versatility of steam cleaning. You can use the machine to work on different kinds of surfaces and fabrics all over your home with the same efficiency and cleanness as other cleaning devices.

Wrap Up

Getting a good steam cleaning machine could save you all the headache that comes with having to clean all the windows at your place.

It’s fast, easy, and effective. In just five simple steps, you’ll be able to achieve the crystal clear windows you’ve always hoped for.

Professional cleaners will often resort to using strong chemicals to clean grout. At home, this is unsafe for kids, bad for the environment, and harmful to you! Many people are now realizing that steam cleaners are an excellent tool for cleaning grout. But many people are still scared that using their steam cleaner will damage their grout or tiles.

Does Steam Cleaning Damage Grout?

Steam cleaning will not damage your grout. Do not use your steam cleaner on damaged grout. Damage caused by steam cleaners is usually because steam cleaners were used on already damaged grout or were used with chemicals.

I seem to ALWAYS get these questions about grout from fans of my site. It seems to be one that plagues the internet.

So in this article, once and for all, I’ll be covering everything you need to know about steam cleaning grout and I’ll teach you how not to do it in a way that causes damage to it.

What Is Grout Anyway?

What is grout made out of?

Firstly, let’s get back to basics to understand what grout actually is.

Grout in house tile installations is usually composed of a mixture of both cement and sand. There’s also another type of grout called epoxy-grout. It’s a bit different in nature, more expensive, and is often used in the installation of glass tiles or in places like splashbacks. It’s also more water-resistant, and less prone to staining.

Folks generally depend on standard grout made from cement and sand because it is cheaper to make and readily available. Bathrooms usually use cement-based grout unless you have fancy tiles.

Kitchens might have cement based grout for the tiles on the floor, and Epoxy-based grout for the splashbacks where they get exposed to things like acids and oils.

Cement based grout is porous which means that it is likely to absorb literally anything. This ultimately causes grime and bacteria to accumulate. In moist areas like your shower, the grout between tiles most likely suffers from mildew and mold accumulation.

Grout’s biggest enemy is constant dampness & dirty mop water!
Dampness allows mold to grow & dirty mop water causes discoloration of your grout. Instead of being pale in color, it just turns into an ugly brown, which is gross!

Cleaning Grout The Old Fashioned Way

Can I Clean Grout by Scrubbing?

Well, the answer is yes…. I guess… but don’t bother.

Yes, you can clean your grout by applying grout cleaning products and scrubbing with a brush. A special grout brush will make this easier. But no, it won’t give you optimum cleanliness, especially if your grout is really suffering.

Fugenial'Fuginator Tile Joint Cleaning Brush for Use in The...

That’s because mold, mildew, and stains penetrate the surface of the grout.

As the grout is porous, stains get in below the surface so your superficial scrubbing will never be able to reach it.

Mold and mildew have a place to hide inside the surface of the grout which means that no matter how hard you scrub, there will still be some mold or mildew leftover that comes back annoyingly quickly!

Ways to Clean Grout Without A Steam Cleaner (How People Normally Clean Grout)

These are some of the most common methods to clean grout. They’ll work best for you if your grout is relatively new and hasn’t been damaged yet with repetitive cleaning.

Using Grout-Cleaning Products

One of the most recommended grout-cleaning products is Grout-Eez.

Wear some gloves and protective glasses, spread some on the grout between your tiles, leave for 5 to 10 minutes. Then scrub.

Scrubbing is done best with a grout-cleaning-specialized scrubber, which doesn’t damage your grout by pulling it out.

Using Homemade Mixtures

You can create a homemade mixture by combining the following ingredients:

  • ½ cup of Baking Soda
  • ¼ cup of Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1 tsp of liquid dish soap

Spread that mixture on your grout, leave for a while, then scrub, scrub, scrub!

The Issue With Cleaning Grout With Cleaners

Since you’ll be using abrasive heavy-duty cleaners, there are definitely downsides to cleaning grout by hand. If you use these heavy-duty cleaners regularly, your grout will wear out.

Some folks use other products, like bleach and vinegar. They both have good cleansing effects. However, bleach stains colored grout, and it’s not often recommended on regular grout either by the manufacturer.

Vinegar is a big no-no as well. The reason is that vinegar is an acid, whereas, the cement component in your grout is alkaline based. Acids react with alkaline creating a neutralization reaction whose products are salt and water. In simpler terms, using homemade solutions with vinegar causes grout’s cement to dissolve, which will cause its wear and breakdown.

Another thing you also shouldn’t add to your grout whilst hand-cleaning it is any oil/wax-based cleaner, like PineSol or Pledge.

Like we’ve mentioned, grout is porous. It’ll absorb whatever’s poured on it and Pledge/PineSol is no exception. Oil aids in dirt and debris accumulation so congrats, you’ve just made things worse.

Steam Cleaning Grout – The Better Alternative!

The best method for cleaning grout is definitely steam cleaning!

What is a Steam Cleaner?

A handheld steam cleaner is a machine designed for deep-cleaning tasks. It heats water above its boiling point and then releases water vapor in the form of blasts through a nozzle. These gushes of steam loosen up any form of dirt, grime, and mildew.

Steam cleaner nozzles are equipped with nylon/brass stiff brushes, which you can use to scrub stubborn dirt in tandem with steam cleaning. The final result is wondrous.

Will Steam Cleaning Damage My Grout?

No, it won’t. There’s a big misconception plaguing people’s minds that steam cleaning will damage your grout but that’s nowhere near the truth.

Steam cleaning uses water vapor, which when released, comes in contact with the grout cement-sand mixtures surface. It sanitizes the surface of the grout, but the cement-sand mixture is much stronger than the steam. Steam cleaning doesn’t even damage your grout sealer if it’s applied.

What about people on forums who’ve said they had their grout really damaged because of it?

The only time grout may get damaged from steam cleaning and/or any other kind of cleaning is when the grout is already damaged, or if you mix a harsh cleaning agent in your steam cleaner.

You should avoid adding anything into your steam cleaner when cleaning your grout. Just water is enough to do the task!

We’ll later cover up signs and symptoms of grout damage which indicates that the grout’s time is up and that it will need to get replaced.

Types of Steam Cleaners

There are 4 types of steam cleaners, and while all of them produce steam to thoroughly clean anything. They come in various shapes and sizes to suit different cleaning sites.

A Steam Mop, which is one of the types of steam cleaners wouldn’t suit the grueling task of grout cleaning as it’s meant to cover a larger surface area for cleaning floors and tiles.

Handheld steam cleaners, or ordinary steam cleaners with a hose are portable, easy manover and come with a nozzle accessory will work best for cleaning grouts.

3 Best Steam Cleaners for Grout Cleaning

It’d benefit you greatly if you’d invest in a steam cleaner. It’s an excellent method to maintain cleanliness and sanitization in your house with water as the only component.

I’ve created a nice list of the 3 best grout steam cleaners available to aid you in choosing one that’d suit you. Take a look!

How Can I Safely Steam Clean Grout?

The first thing you should do is to inspect your grout prior to cleaning.

If your grout suffers from discoloration, cracks, holes and/or is literally falling apart, you’ll have to consult a professional about fixing it, or in more extreme cases, changing it entirely.

After you’ve made sure your grout is fine, let’s start with the steam cleaning process. It’s simple; there’s no math at all.

Step 1

You’ll start your steam cleaning process by filling your steam cleaner with water if not filled, and preferably attach your nylon/brass brush if available. Heat the water up into at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Lightly brush your grout. You’ll start noticing debris and dirt dissolving. Your steam cleaner will lift dirt off your tile completely.

Step 3

Once all residual dirt has been lifted off, and your grout is clean, you’ve achieved your task, but you’re now left with unclean tiles.

You can either wipe tiles with a cloth or switch into a rectangular mop accessory or anything similar to wipe off the dirt.

Congratulations! You’re done. Your tile should be as good as new. Wasn’t that easy!

Grout Sealing

After you’re done with cleaning grout, it’s always a plus point to apply a grout sealer.

A grout sealer is a coating applied over the grout to seal it off. This prevents moisture, dirt, and debris from penetrating the porous structure of the grout.

If you’ve already had a grout sealer recently applied on your grout lines before steam cleaning, then you won’t have to re-apply it.

If it’s been a while or you haven’t got a grout sealer on, I advise you to apply it on your grout lines, as this will protect it from moisture and debris. It’ll save you the effort of cleaning your grout a multitude of times per week.

Taking Care of Your Grout

Grout, especially shower grout, is in massive need of care. Yes, this seems troublesome, but it’ll save you a good amount of money and time invested in re-grouting due to improper care.

Use the squeegee to guide water to your drain when showering; you can wipe any excess droplets with a microfiber cloth or a sponge squeegee.

Make sure to keep your shower and bathroom well-ventilated. Stagnant water is not a grout’s best friend.

Finally, make sure to reseal your grout at least once a year.

To Wrap It All Up

Grout is often neglected, that is till your tiles become dislodged and problems arise. It’s extremely important to provide good care for your grout. The best way is through steam cleaning.

Contrary to popular belief, steam cleaning doesn’t damage grout in any way. It can deeply cleanse it from the inside ensuring its longevity.

Get your steam cleaner and give it a try. Steam cleaners are amazing cleaning, disinfecting tools that all homes should have anyway, so there’s no harm in buying one at all.

You can use a steam cleaner in cleaning curtains, carpets, tiles, and even greasy ovens and BBQs.

Does cleaning your carpet seem a tedious task? Not if you know a few hacks like the ones you’re about to find out here.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to steam clean a carpet yourself without using chemicals.

Steam cleaning a carpet is a great way to remove stains and disinfect it at the same time. All you need is a steam cleaner and water. At 212°F, steam can kill fleas, bedbugs, mold spores, and germs. It will leave your carpet refreshed, clean as new, and safe for pets and kids.

The process is easy you don’t have to get a professional carpet cleaning service. You can do it yourself and I’m going to show you how in this simple step-by-step guide.

How to Steam Clean a Carpet – Step by Step

Carpets that are not heavily soiled can be deep cleaned and sanitized at home with a steam mop. All you need is the right attachment to remove spot stains, dirt, and grime. You’ll also need a regular vacuum cleaner to remove dust and lose particles from the fabric.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to steam clean a carpet yourself using a steam mop.

1. Clear the room

Remove all furniture, toys and any items from the carpet. Most steam carpet steam mops are operated by pushing or pulling them. Having a lot of clutter on the carpet will slow down the process.

Some furniture may be heavy to move from the carpet. Wrap furniture legs with a waterproof tape to protect them from hot steam when you glide the mop nearby. Use aluminum foil to deter moisture if you don’t have flex tape.

It is also possible that you may not have enough room where you can put the furniture to pave way for cleaning. Try moving the furniture and other items at one end of the room so that you can get space to clean the cleared side.

How to steam clean a carpet step 1: Move furniture from teh carpet.

Pro tip: Clean your baseboards before going on to the next step. A lot of dust settles on them over time. Use a damp piece of cloth to clear all the dust here.

2. Vacuum the carpet

Vacuum the entire carpet twice to remove hair, dust particles, crumbs, and any other loose dirt. A carpet steam cleaning machine can dissolve stains and restore the fabric. It is not capable of removing solid dirt particles lodged deep in the carpet fibers.

  • For the first time, run the vacuum in one direction. Make sure you do this slowly enough to pick as much dust particles as possible.
  • For the second time, vacuum the carpet in the opposite direction. Be thorough enough to pick up large debris and even some parasites such as bed bugs.
Steam cleaning a carpet step 2 -Vacuum the carpet

Pro tip: Give the high traffic areas added attention when vacuuming your carpet. Foot traffic carries a lot of debris and deposits it into the carpet. These are the areas you need to spend more time on.

Remember, a proper vacuum job loosens your carpet’s fibers. This prepares it for easy deep cleaning using a steam mop.

3. Treat spot stains before steaming

Carpet stains such as lipstick, food and red wine spills can make it look very dirty. Pet messes such as dog urine and even poop also leave unsightly dirty spots.

Your vacuum and steam cleaning action cannot get rid of these on their own. So, here is how you should treat spot stains on your carpet before steaming:

  • Blot a piece of cloth with a carpet stain remover.
  • Dab the spot so that it soaks in the stain treatment solution.
  • Allow it to sit for a few minutes before you start steam cleaning the carpet.
Steam cleaning a carpet step 3- Treat spot stains

Pro tip: Do not rub the stain spots with stain remover. This usually pushes the stain deeper into the carpet fiber, making it difficult to remove even with a carpet steam cleaning machine.

I’ve shared a video I found very helpful for DIY carpet stain removal below in this article. Be sure to check it out.

4. Prepare the carpet steam cleaner

Remove the water tank from your steam cleaner if it is detachable. Use a measuring cup to fill the tank with distilled water as directed by the manufacturer.

You can add a carpet cleaning solution, dish soap or white vinegar into the tank. I prefer to use only water because steam is enough at getting rid of stains on upholstery. Check the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning solution for your steam cleaner. Do not put anything that’s not recommended in the tank.

Attach the tank back onto the steam mop and plug it in a power outlet. Allow enough time for the water to heat up to steaming temperature. The preferred temperature if you want to kill dust mites, bedbugs and fleas is 212°F.

Some carpet steam cleaning machines have a detergent compartment. If yours doesn’t have one, you may mix it with the water in the tank.

How to steam clean a carpet step 4 - Prepare the steam cleaner

Pro tip: If you prefer natural cleaning and sanitization, use a vinegar solution. Some soaps contain chemicals that are not safe for your pets and kids.

5. Run the steam cleaner on the carpet

Run the steam cleaner on your carpet starting from one corner to another. Make clean straight lines with each run. Overlap the previous line every time you start a new one. This’ll ensure you do not miss any dirty spots.

I prefer starting from the corner farthest from the door. This way, I find it easier to move into the next room without stepping on the freshly cleaned carpet.

Steam cleaning a carpet step 5 - Steam clean the carpet.

Pro tip: If your steamer uses soap or carpet shampoo, run it over the same line twice. The first time you do, it injects soap over the fabric, and the second time, it sucks it up together with the dirt.

6. Allow the carpet time to dry

Steam cleaning a carpet does not leave a lot of water behind. Unlike mopping hardwood and tile floors, it does not get rid of moisture instantly.

Hot water extraction on carpets usually requires up to 12 hours of drying time. You may need to allow your carpet 4 to 12 hours to dry and for all the moisture to escape.

Here are a few tips to help your carpet dry faster after steam cleaning:

  • If you have a shop vac that has both dry and wet capabilities, use it to suck up excess moisture from the carpet. Simply run it over your carpet as you would your vacuum cleaner to make it dry faster.
  • Put your dehumidifier in the middle of the room and run it on the high setting.
  • Open the windows to allow moisture to escape easily and your carpet to dry quickly.
  • If you have fans, place them on the carpet after steam cleaning. Ensure they point downward for quick results.
How to steam clean a carpet step 6 - Allow it to dry.

Drying your carpet is as important as cleaning it. Leaving moisture behind will attract mold and mildew even after sanitizing it with steam.

Spot Cleaning Rugs

Before it’s that time to deep clean your rug, you may need to learn a few hacks for removing stains. Common stains you may have to deal with include red wine, ketchup, pet urine, makeup stains, and food spills. Coffee, blood, and ink are also common stubborn stains.

When these happen, you don’t have to deep clean the entire rug. A spot cleaning kit is all you need to get rid of the stains from your carpet. You’ll need baking soda, ammonia solution, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol. Hydrogen peroxide, nail polish remover (acetone) can also help remove some stains. Q-tips, white towels, and paper towels are also vital in this kit.

I find stain-resistant carpets to be the best, but even with normal ones, try to remove the stain as soon as possible. Doing so prevents sticky stains that’ll be stubborn to get rid of.

Here’s what to do to remove spot stains from your carpet.

  1.  Pick up the stains as soon as they occur on the rug.
  2. Dab a carpet stain remover on the spot if there’s any of it remaining.
  3. Blot carefully with a clean towel to pick up the remaining stains.

If you’re using a carpet cleaning solution, treat the spot with it and allow a few minutes for it to act. Use a handheld steam cleaner with a spot cleaning attachment to steam up the area and remove the stain. Here’s a video to help you with different spot stains on your rug.

Can I use a steam iron to spot clean my area rug?

For small areas with stains, you may not need a steam cleaner. A garment steam iron is a handy tool you can use for this purpose. The hot water vapor will loosen the stain and allow you to blot it out of your carpet.

Ensure that you do not iron the spot directly. You can damage the fibers of the rug. Use a wet towel between the rug and the steam iron. Once you’ve applied enough steam, blot away the loosened stain with a paper towel.

How Does a Steam Work on Carpet?

Most of us have known carpet shampooing for a long time. It is very different from using steam to clean your carpet. I did a comparison between steam cleaning a carpet and shampooing it here.

But how does steam cleaning work on a carpet? With a steam cleaner, hot vaporized water is blasted into the rug at high pressure. The heat breaks down grime, dirt and oils in the carpet fibers. As you move the steam cleaner in over the carpet, it sucks as much of the dirt and oils as possible.

This process leaves your rugs clean, restored, and disinfected using steam.

Note that not all steam cleaners can do a good job with cleaning carpets. High pressure handheld steam cleaners can remove spot stains. You will find them ineffective at cleaning large surface areas such as a large area rug.

I recommend you choose a steam cleaning machine that’s good for carpets for routine steaming.

Benefits of Steam Cleaning Your Carpet

Although cleaning a dirty carpet may be a little tedious, doing it yourself can save you anywhere between $50 and $500. But that’s not the only benefit. Steam cleaning is better than shampooing and here are the benefits:

  • Extends the carpet’s lifespan: Sanitizing your carpet on a regular basis keeps it in tip-top condition. High traffic areas are protected from wear and tear, discoloration, and staining. This extends the rug’s lifespan.
  • Get rid of fleas: Carpets infested with fleas can be a nightmare. Flea bites are itchy and a misery. Steam gets rid of fleas in your carpet by destroying their entire life cycle.
  • Get rid of bed bugs: Like fleas, bed bugs can live in your carpet too. Steam is one of the best methods used to get rid of bed bugs and their eggs from carpets and mattresses.
  • Safe for pets and children: Steam cleaning carpets destroys harmful bacteria and germs. Your family will be safe on disinfected floor mats and rugs.
  • Removes odors: Stain build-up causes musty smells in area rugs. Cleaning them with steam is a great way to deodorize your carpets. It even works well for unpleasant pet odors.
  • Kills allergens: Steam carpet cleaning is safe for people with allergies. Hot steam kills mold, dust mites, mildew – the common triggers of allergic reactions.
  • Easy stain removal: I find it a lot easier to get rid of stains with steam. Pet messes, grease, red wine, and even lipstick come off your carpet with ease when you blast them with steam.

How often to clean a carpet

The American Lung Association recommends deep cleaning a carpet at least once a year. This prevents the accumulation of pet dander, mold spores, and other allergens.

Regular cleaning keeps carpets free from irritants. In the cleaning industry, the rule of thumb is to deep clean your carpet 3 times a year. Vacuum your carpet twice a week to prevent debris from lodging too deep in the fabric.

But, the number of times you should deep clean rugs depends on a few factors. These include:

  • The amount of foot traffic on the carpet.
  • Whether you have pets in the house.
  • Whether you have allergies.
  • Whether there’s cigarette smoke to be removed.

These factors require you to deep clean your carpet more often than you would otherwise. At least once every week will keep your floor mat refreshed, restored and disinfected. This may, yet, affect the lifespan of your carpet.

Professional vs DIY Steam Cleaning

You look at your carpet and wonder, should you call in a professional cleaning service? Can you get it clean yourself?

The answer to this is very simple. First, if your carpet is heavily soiled, an ordinary multipurpose steam mop may not do an effective job. But if we are talking light stains, a DIY cleaning session can get it refreshed and restored.

Professional carpet cleaners come with commercial steamers. These are usually powerful enough to complete the task faster than household steamers.

A single session of professional deep cleaning may need you to do in two sessions to get the same results. The upside to the DIY option is that you save on the costs while learning how to do it within your preferences.

Cost of Steam Cleaning a Carpet

How much will it cost to hire a professional carpet cleaning service? Well, when you opt not to clean it yourself, it will cost you between $42 and $75. Sometimes, the cost can go as high as $125 for home services and $350 for office carpet cleaning.

A few factors come into consideration when deciding the cost of steam cleaning a carpet. The most important ones are size and how dirty the rug is.

  • Standard costs per square foot range between $0.18 and 0.50.
  • Extra services such as bed bug extermination usually lead to higher costs.

From my experience, the larger the area of your home or carpet, the more you’ll save per square foot.

FAQ

Does steam cleaning carpet remove stains?

It is possible to remove some stains with steam only. However, some stains may need a special treatment procedure before applying steam to be able to get rid of them. For example, waxy stains such as lipstick can be treated and removed using acetone. A steam cleaner will then follow to sanitize the rug.

Can you use vinegar to steam clean a carpet?

If you do not want to use detergent or chemical solutions, vinegar is a great organic alternative. It breaks down stains and helps in disinfecting your area rugs as well. If you prefer using it, spray a small amount of vinegar before steam cleaning the carpet.

Have you ever cleaned your mattress since you bought it? No? Well, you really need to! Mattresses pick up all kinds of dirt mites and dead skin. Steam cleaning your mattress is the perfect solution!

I’m going to show you how to steam clean a mattress and remove urine and sweat stains, and kill bedbugs and dust mites. You can use this hack on memory foam mattresses, pillow tops, and pillows.

To steam clean a mattress, sprinkle baking soda on the mattress first and leave for an hour to get rid of odors. Vacuum with the upholstery attachment and then run the steam cleaner all over the surface. Leave it for 2-4 hours to dry. Steam will remove sweat and urine stains from the mattress.

See the complete step-by-step process below.

Can you steam clean a mattress?

Yes, you can clean your mattress using a steam cleaner. It will get rid of stains from sweat, urine, and dirt. Deep cleaning a mattress with steam will also disinfect it and remove allergens.

DIY cleaning with your own steam cleaner is cheaper than that of a mattress cleaning service. Hot water extraction is good for deep lying stains.

Urine stains on an old mattress can be deep that a steam cleaner cannot remove. In this case, you may need to opt for hot water extraction or dry cleaning. The latter uses foam or powder with chemical stain removers.

But for routine cleaning and sanitization, do it yourself with a steam cleaner.

Steps to Steam Clean a Mattress

I choose to clean naturally with steam. Superheated low-moisture steam is the best way to remove stains and sanitize your mattress. It is completely natural and safe for you and your kids. Using steam will simply refresh your mattresses, and kill bedbugs and dust mites.

To prepare for this step-by-step procedure, you’ll need the following: baking soda, a steam cleaner, and a vacuum cleaner. You’ll have to plug in your steamer early enough to prepare for steaming in step 4 below.

If you already have a good steam cleaner, here’s how to steam clean mattresses:

  1. Remove all bedding from your mattress – sheets, pillows, mattress cover.
  2. Sprinkle a fair amount of baking soda all over the mattress and leave it for 45 minutes to remove odors.
  3. Vacuum the mattress with the upholstery attachment to remove dust and the baking soda.
  4. Run the steamer across the mattress with the upholstery attachment to blast in the steam.
  5. Leave the mattress for about 4 hours to dry.

Steam cleaners do not leave behind a lot of moisture. However, a little bit of it may be trapped inside your mattress due to heavy steaming on urine stains. So, leave the mattress in an aerated area to allow moisture to escape before dressing it.

If you do not have a mattress attachment or upholstery attachment, wrap a towel on the head of your steam cleaner. It will help prevent scratches and tears on your mattress.

Ensure you get the water in your steamer to heat up nicely to at least  212 °F to be able to disinfect your upholstery. High temperatures will also kill any fleas, bedbugs, and dust mites. The process will leave your bedroom clean and safe for kids and anyone with allergy.

Here’s a quick video showing the steaming action.

How often should I deep clean my mattress?

Did you know that there’s quite a bit of sweat you leave on your bed every night? That amounts to a lot of sweat each year that could attract fungi and make you sick. And if you haven’t invested in an effective bed-wetting alarm, your younger kids might be wetting their beds.

In one month, that could be a good amount of sweat and pee loaded into your bedding.

Purpose to clean your mattresses twice a month. It will prevent the accumulation of dirt, urine, saliva, and sweat. I prefer to deep clean at least twice a month.

Here are signs you need to deep clean your bedding:

  • There are visible stains and marks from urine, sweat, and dirt.
  • Your allergy symptoms worsen at night (meaning there’s buildup of dust, dust mites etc.)
  • The mattress smells or has unusual odors.
  • You have bedbug bites in the morning.
  • You’ve never cleaned your old mattress since you bought it.

These signs indicate that your mattress is dirty and unhealthy for you.

Precautions

Steam is natural and very effective. It disinfects, deodorizes, and cleans even tough stains. Yet, you should be careful when using it on your upholstery. Take these precautions when using it on your bedding.

  • Steam can damage elastic parts of a mattress and other bedding, so it is important not to be obsessed with it. Choose a medium heat setting to prevent damage to these parts.
  • Read the mattress care guide to understand the best way to clean it. Cleaning with steam may void the warranty of your mattress.

Can you steam clean a pillow top mattress?

A pillow top mattress comes with additional padding. It gives the soft comfort feeling when you sleep on it. Since it extends visibly, it appears as though a pillow is sewn over the mattress beneath it.

The positioning of a pillow top mattress makes it prone to dirt, sweat, and urine stains. The good news is that you can get rid of these stains using a steam cleaner. Follow the procedure described above to sanitize and deodorize your pillow top.

Remember to read the manufacturer’s recommendations to prevent damage to the pillow top.

Memory foam mattress

Memory foam mattresses are made of polyurethane and some chemicals.  This material is sensitive to pressure and temperature, where it molds to the shape of your body.

The big question I usually get is: Can you clean memory foam mattresses with steam? Well, the first thing you need to do is read the label for instructions before you attempt cleaning it. Professional cleaners do this all the time to keep the warranty intact.

What I like to do is steam clean a memory foam mattress with a medium heat setting. This ensures that heat does not damage the ‘cells’ of the mattress or pillow.

Also, clean lightly when using a steam cleaning machine. Sticking the steamer in one position for long can cause weakening and damage to the polyurethane material.

Using a Steam Iron

For most of us, spot stains on a mattress are a concern. Instead of hiring a professional mattress cleaner, your steam iron house will do.

Place a towel on the stain and press with your steam iron. Repeat until the moisture gets rid of the stain.

This hack is effective for small areas with pee and sweat stains. It’ll be tedious and time-consuming to clean the entire mattress with a steam iron.

Reasons for steam cleaning a mattress.

Benefits of Deep Cleaning a Mattress with Steam

Steam is natural and safe for pets, kids, and the environment. When using it to clean your bedding, you’ll enjoy the following benefits.

  • Removal of sweat stains: As already noted, sweating at night leaves your cozy bed with liters of sweat. Over time, sweat leaves odor and stains on your mattress. A steam cleaner gets rid of these stains and odor with ease.
  • Steam gets rid of urine stains: If you have a bedwetting family member or child, you’ll need a multipurpose steam cleaner. Use it to remove urine and the ammonia stains it leaves in the mattress.
  • Kills bedbugs: Bedbugs and fleas can infest a house. If you have these, you’ll wake up with itchy bug bites. Hot steam kills fleas and bedbugs as well as their eggs allowing you to get quality sleep.
  • Steam disinfects a mattress: Dead skin cells and germs remain on your bed every time you use it. Using steam to clean it will kill germs and other pathogens.
  • Removes allergens: Dust, dust mites and mold can all be found in your bedroom. Clean it with steam on a regular basis to get rid of allergy triggers.
  • Steam cleaning gets rid of bad odors: The bad smell in your bedroom comes from sweat and urine. Using steam and baking soda will get rid of these unwanted smells.

I like using steam because it breaks down dirt with pressure and hot water vapor. It makes the cleaning process fast and effortless compared to hot water extraction. The drying time for your mattress is also reduced to just a few hours.

What is the Cost of Cleaning a Mattress Professionally?

The average cost of cleaning a mattress is between $50 and $150. This usually depends on the cleaning service and the method used. Cleaning services usually charge on the higher side of that range when it is an old mattress.

A few factors may affect the rate charged for cleaning a mattress. They include the following:

  • Amount of dirt: Old mattresses tend to be very dirty. They’ll cost you more to clean than newer, well-maintained ones.
  • Mattress size: Small mattresses cost less to clean compared to large ones.
  • Bedbug removal: If the cleaning service includes getting rid of bedbugs, the cost may be $500-$1500.

Other than the 3 factors above, the cleaning method can affect the price. The material used to make your mattress dictates which method of cleaning to use. Memory foam mattresses cost more to clean, for example.

The cost of steam cleaning a mattress may include the service charge for the steam machine. You can cut on these costs by using a steam iron or your handheld steam cleaner.

Cleaning a Used Mattress with Baking Soda

This hack is good for old mattresses because they can have a bad odor. When an old mattress smells and produces dust, it is hard to sleep comfortably on it.

Baking soda is a good deodorizer. It will remove all the bad smells from urine and sweat, leaving your bed refreshed. To give your bedroom an even better smell, get your favorite essential oil for this procedure.

You’ll need:

  • A vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment.
  • Baking soda.
  • An essential oil of your choice.

To clean a used mattress with baking soda, follow these steps:

  1. Add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda in the box and shake well to mix and remove lumps.
  2. Sprinkle your baking soda mixture all over the mattress.
  3. Rub the mixture into the mattress and leave it for about an hour.
  4. Vacuum the mattress thoroughly to ensure all the baking soda is removed and the surface is clean.

If you’re used to flipping your mattress, make sure you clean both sides using this procedure.
