Disadvantages and Things to Avoid with Steam Mop

It is undeniable that there are some amazing benefits of using a steam mop, but bear in mind that it can also be a double-edged sword.

Although, it is a really useful cleaning gadget, there are certain things you should definitely avoid or look out for when using a steam mop.

1. Don’t Clean One Spot For Too Long

This is something you will likely see in every instruction manual for a steam mop. Most surfaces (with the exception of tile) are susceptible to damage from overheating.

The heat needs around 10 to 15 seconds to do its work, and prolonged use over the same surface is likely to cause it damage as the steam overheats the surface.

2. Do Not Steam Clean Waxed Floors

The steaming heat definitely does not mix well with a recently waxed floor, as it will melt the wax, and ruin the fresh glossy surface.

If you need to clean something from a recently waxed floor, make sure to test it first.

Pick a spot underneath your furniture that is generally not visible to see what happens, before you try and clean the exposed area of the floor.

3. Be Very Careful with Wooden Floors

Truth be told you should be cautious about the wooden surfaces in general but be extra careful with unsealed wood floorings.

Unsealed floors, old wooden floors, and even some types of wood might turn out problematic.

Since you are using water, even the smallest opening can be enough for it to end up inside the wood floor which can cause it to swell up and/or warp. This is the same reason that mopping should be avoided on some wooden floors.

Check with the manufacturer before steam cleaning and choose a steam cleaner that is well suited to steam cleaning hardwood floors. It would be for the best to consult with online users on online forms that have the same floor as you, to get their feedback before you start cleaning.
